The National Arts Festival

The National Arts Festival is an important event on the South African cultural calendar, and the biggest annual celebration of the arts on the African continent.

Starting at the end of June/beginning of July, it runs for 11 days in the small university city of Grahamstown, which is situated in the Eastern Cape, 130km from Port Elizabeth.

The Festival comprises a Main and a Fringe programme, which are both administered by the National Arts Festival Office. The Festival is reliant on sponsorship with the core sponsors being the Department of Arts and Culture, the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Office of the Premier, and Standard Bank of South Africa. Media partners include M-Net and City Press newspaper.

The programme comprises drama, dance, physical theatre, comedy, opera, music, jazz, visual art exhibitions, film, student theatre, street theatre, lectures, craft fair, workshops, and a children’s arts festival.

Rock the daisies

Rocking the Daisies is an eco-friendly music and lifestyle festival taking place at the Cloof Wine Estate in Darling (Western Cape). The first festival took place in 1994 and was the idea of a businessman from Oudtshoorn, Nic Barrow, and a former Public Relations Manager for the South African publishing firm Naspers, Andrew Marais.Annually the KKNK attracts more than 1,000 artists performing or exhibiting in more than 200 productions and exhibitions over eight days; usually at the end of March or the beginning of April.The festival has come to play a central role in Afrikaans stage productions – new productions are usually first staged at the KKNK and are then performed throughout the rest of South Africa during the rest of the year.

the Grahamstown International Arts Festival

The National Arts Festival is the largest celebration of arts, culture and creativity on the African continent. The 2018 Festival will take place from 28 June to 8 July. Local and international artists and presenters interested in having their work considered for the Main Programme of the 2018 Festival are invited to register expressions of interest .
